Occupational Therapy for Children with Autism — What It Does and Why It Helps

Most people have heard of speech therapy. Far fewer understand what occupational therapy actually does for children with autism — and why it can be transformative.

What Is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy helps children develop the skills they need for everyday activities. Getting dressed. Holding a pencil. Eating with a spoon. Sitting in a classroom without sensory distress. These are not small things — for a child with autism, they can be genuinely overwhelming daily challenges.

What an OT Works On:
- Sensory processing — helping the child manage how they experience the world
- Fine motor skills — grip, coordination, handwriting
- Gross motor skills — balance, coordination, physical confidence
- Self-care skills — dressing, eating, toileting independently
- Attention and focus in structured activities
- Transitions between activities without distress

What Progress Looks Like
Progress in occupational therapy is personal. For one child it is tolerating a haircut without distress. For another it is tying shoelaces. For another it is sitting through an entire meal with the family. Each one is a genuine transformation in daily life — for the child and for the whole family.

OT at Abhays Rainbow Kids Foundation
Our occupational therapists work with children from age 2, assessing each child individually and designing programmes specific to their sensory profile and developmental needs. OT is integrated into our daily school schedule — not treated as a separate add-on. Contact us to understand how OT might benefit your child.
